I have no clue what that title means, but my aging Czech grandmother once used the phrase to describe my mother’s crazy Jack-Russell terrier, who also happens to be my arch nemeses.

Anyway, two months ago I up and left the Midwest and moved to California to spend time with my grandfather who has Alzheimer’s. I’m 28, and this may be my last opportunity to spend a significant chunk of time with him. Which sucks. (What doesn’t suck is that my income doubled while I was away and that I have the freedom to move wherever and whenever I want; especially during times like these).

But tomorrow I fly to Orlando to hang out with Ed Dale and his gang, hanging with sketchy Internet marketers :-), and get in a couple alligator fights. I’m also thinking about visiting this funky ice bar while I’m there. And on the 29th I move back to the very cold Madison, Wisconsin (which, believe it or not, will likely be cooler and more alcoholic than the ice bar :-).

At any rate, I wanted to leave you this message before I start zigzagging my way across this crazy country for the next 5 days.

Stay turned next week for alligator stories and a big upcoming announcement.

Your pal,
Clay

[A Note from Clay: This article -- by Kent Thune -- is one of the most remarkable articles I've read on the topic of work/life balance and lifestyle design for a long, long time. It's well written, it speaks to the heart, and it's filled with uncommon wisdom. And I'm not just writing this because Kent graciously allowed me to post his article (although I'm ridiculously thrilled about that). At any rate, I highly recommend reading this post in its entirety and then visiting Kent's blog].

Clay’s idea of “Financing Your Freedom” is especially interesting to me – not only because I believe in it but because I have lived it; I am living it; and I point clients and blog readers in the same direction.

Since there is not one best path to follow, please allow me to humbly share my own, not that it should be yours, but with the hope that something here will shed light on your own path…

“I do nothing but go about persuading you all, old and young alike, not to take thought for your persons or your properties, but and chiefly to care about the greatest improvement of the soul. I tell you that virtue is not given by money, but that from virtue comes money and every other good of man, public as well as private. This is my teaching, and if this is the doctrine which corrupts the youth, I am a mischievous person.” ~ Socrates, as quoted by Plato, ‘The Death of Socrates’

To paraphrase a modern book author, Mitch Anthony, “life is not about making money – money is about making a life.” I learned this lesson recently, not from an ancient philosopher; not from a modern author; and certainly not from a blog…

I learned the lesson from a 4-year old boy…

When my first-born son was four years old, I was extremely busy “climbing the corporate ladder.” As any curious child might inquire, my young son asked me why I was away from home so much, and specifically, why I was missing important things like “trick-or-treating” on Halloween and Christmas plays. Just as any normal, dutiful father would do, I replied that I was “working hard for our family to earn money for all the things we have…”

Without a moment’s hesitation, my four-year old son said, “I’d rather have my Daddy than money.”

I was speechless as my heart hit the floor…

How ironic is that? My son’s priorities were straight and mine were not! I managed hundreds of millions of dollars for tens of thousands of people at a pension firm and here was a four-year old child delivering the kind of paradigm shift about money and life that I needed to find the best path for me and my family…

I now operate a successful business out of my home; I drop my son off at school; I greet him when he gets off the bus; I put him and his younger brother to bed at night; and I’ve never missed a significant event in my two boys’ lives since then…

Now, please allow me to humbly share with you some valuable lessons I’ve learned along my own path to a meaningful existence…

"As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it." ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Enable opportunities: The greatest achievements and life events are rarely planned, but they are not completely random, either. What’s more, humans are terrible at predicting future happiness.

With this knowledge, we should not attempt to hyper-intentionally “make money” or force opportunities, but to enable them – let opportunities happen by keeping an open mind; by embracing the unknown and unexpected; and by learning how to recognize opportunities as they present themselves.

"We have to recognize accident, i.e., the fact that there is no formula, no ‘principle’, which covers all things; that there is no totality or system of things. And this recognition at once supports a life of ‘responsibility and adventure’ and leads to scientific discovery." ~ John Anderson

Have a balance of responsibility and adventure: This extends upon enabling opportunities: Some of the most important scientific discoveries and inventions were “accidents;” yet those accidents may not have happened if the original scientific objective was not created.

A balance of responsibility and adventure – of planning and accidents – of science and art – of order and randomness – can provide the ideal combination that leads to discovery, and the beginning of the greatest of all discoveries, self-discovery.

Can you think of examples of accidental discoveries in your life? Did they occur by random chance or by intentional design? Or was there originally a plan but that plan seemingly turned into something completely different yet unexpectedly wonderful?

"Man acts as though he were the shaper and master of language, while in fact language remains the master of man." ~ Martin Heidegger

Define words for your self: What do the words success, wealth, strength, weakness and freedom mean to you? I ask my clients to define retirement. Most say something like, “Retirement means I’ve saved enough money so I don’t have to work anymore.” I respectfully probe further by asking, “What do you mean by the word, work?” You can imagine how more open-ended questions may then progress to reach something more definitive.

Personally, I define retirement as, “doing what I want, when I want, within reason.” By my own definition, I “retired” two years ago at age 37!

Can you think of examples in your life where the simple definition of words can either distract you from, or lead you to, your path?

“One’s own self is well hidden from one’s own self; of all mines of treasure, one’s own is the last to be dug up.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Uncover your self: Social conventions, language and media noise tell us that we should go to school, get a job, climb the corporate ladder, buy a big car, buy a big house, and buy a big life. Without knowing it, we find ourselves in the rat race without questioning where it will lead us.

Somewhere along the progression of birth/school/work/death, our ideal self becomes covered by physical world inhibitors, which will minimize potential and maximize inertia.

I believe that we discover who we are by slowly eliminating who we are not: Once we begin to question this seemingly deterministic fate – this path laid before us by social conventions, language and media noise – we begin to discover, or uncover, our ideal self and shed light upon our own path.

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Align your priorities and pursuits: Think of the things you cherish most in life – those things you live for – the ones that would make your existence meaningful:

Is money at the top of your list? Probably not. If you are like most other people, you may have thought of real priorities, such as health, personal relationships and general well-being.

If you think again, however, you will likely realize that you currently lead your life’s pursuits as if money is your priority. If health, personal relationships and well-being are your priorities, then why are you living as though money is your priority? Why are you engaged in a pursuit that may actually lead you farther from your priorities? Align your priorities and pursuits!

“It should be noted that children at play are not playing about; their games should be seen as their most serious-minded activity.” ~ Michel de Montaigne

Become a child: This sums up all of my previous points and brings us back to where I began my path to a meaningful existence – my son’s life-changing wisdom. To unlearn what we have learned and to uncover our ideal self, becoming a child again can help bring the kind of perspective that may help shine light on your own path:

Play and work can be one and the same.

Ask for help when you need it.

Say what you feel.

Be curious.

Dream big.

Have a hero.

Take risks.

Live now.

"What is important in life is life, and not the result of life." ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

I hope that, by sharing my particular path with you today, you may be enabled to shed light upon your own.

Just remember that the path to a meaningful existence is not the path of least resistance and, as common as this is, it bears repeating: The pursuit of life should be of the pursuit itself – it’s the journey that brings meaning to life – not the destination.

[Editors note #1: This is a guest post by Corey at The Simple Marriage Project. Corey's blog is ridiculously good and one of my favorites (even though I'm not married). I highly recommend that you check it out.]

[Editors note #2: I think a lot of people believe that lifestyle design is just for single white guys who sell nutritional supplements, travel the world, and write books called "The 4-Hour Work Week." But lifestyle design isn't just for single people. In fact, every single interview or guest post on this website features someone with matrimonial obligations: indeed, marriage is probably the one thing that Chris, Jane, Dan, Lisa, and Corey (author of this post) have in common].

"So how’s the old ball and chain?"

"Are you sure you want to be tied down for the rest of your life?"

These are two of the many question you may have been asked before you chose to get married, or they may be questions you are asking yourself currently.

Marriage is choice. And I believe this choice is a tremendous blessing. I shall explain.

Every person has within them a desire to be with others. Hanging out with friends, talking about life with coworkers, sharing serious thoughts with close friends, and sharing intimate moments with a lover. Whatever it is, it’s often better when shared with another person.

But what about the other side of things? The side that each of us have that longs to be the designer of our own life. That doesn’t want to submit to the tyranny of others.

The truth is, we fluctuate back and forth between these two extremes. We move towards the togetherness side of things until those needs are met then we move to the separateness side. Take a look at your life the past few weeks. Can you see when you sought time alone? Or time with another person? Chances are you will be able to recognize this process in your own life when you look for it.

The key to lifestyle design for married people rests in the ability of each person learning to handle more time together as well as time apart. I shall further explain.

And let’s use sex as an example. The most intimate part of a marriage. Where you are physically as close as you can get to another human. However, often this physical closeness does not correlate with emotional, or mental, or spiritual closeness. During sex you may be miles apart. Fantasizing about someone else, going over the day’s to do list, spectatoring (focusing on performance), or any number of other ways to disconnect from your spouse. The point is, you are not connected. Often the reason for this disconnect is you can’t handle the anxiety that is produced from a close connection.

Whenever you get too close to another person, it’s common to do something that will create distance and separation in order to feel better. For instance, you may want your spouse to be more emotionally open and share their feelings, but you interrupt them when they say things you find unpleasant or disagree with (in your view, you may just want to keep the conversation “accurate”). You want a more expressive spouse, but want to control what they express.

Another example involves asking your spouse to take more responsibility for initiating sex, but you want to dictate when, where, how, and why sexual initiations should be made. You want a spouse who can think for themselves- and you want to tell them what they should think!

So how does all this tie into lifestyle design for married people?

1. Marriage is choice. Whenever you fall victim to the idea of being stuck in marriage, you give up your power. You still have an amazing amount of control over your own life in marriage. Granted, this control comes with natural consequences. But it’s control nonetheless. By choosing marriage freely each day, and allowing your spouse to do the same, you up the ante in what you could experience in marriage.

2. Include your spouse in the design of the marriage. This may seem like a no-brainer, but I’m amazed at the amount of couples who’ve never had this discussion. Marriage most often seems to happen by chance with most people. Take charge of your life and marriage and design it! There are many resources out there to help. Namely, The Simple Marriage Project. I know, it’s a shameless plug, but it’s a great resource. You could also hire a marriage coach who can assist you both in getting more out of life and marriage.

Just beginning these conversations with your spouse is a start. So what do you talk about as you design your marriage?

1. Baselining.

Clay has already given a template for these discussions. At some point in the conversation, discuss what you can do without. In fact, cutting back on some things may increase the passion and energy in marriage. I realize cutting back on things and simplifying life runs counter to popular culture, but it really is helpful. My wife and I determined that we really didn’t need to move up to the next size house simply because all our bedrooms were full. Instead of packing to move, we spent the time purging lots of things from our house. Living simply has been a tremendous blessing for our marriage, our family, and ourselves.

2. Dreamlining your marriage.

This involves spending some time with your spouse and dreaming. What are some of the things you both hope to do? Own? Become? Put them all down on paper. Anything goes at this point. It could be family dreams, marriage dreams, and even personal dreams. They all need to be included. Have fun with this step. A couple of our dreams include living in the mountains one day and having our children experience a service project on every major continent before they leave for college.

3. Go to work.

Now that you’ve determined what are the things you can do without, and some dreams to aspire towards, go to work. Not your job or your career, but working towards your dreams. Plan out each other’s roles in the process. Hold each other accountable for making things happen. When you are both working towards similar dreams, a synergy can be created in marriage. Then when these dreams are realized, you get to share them with a co-creator of them as well as someone you love. How great is that?

The Business That Supported Our Family Closed

18 months ago, when I was 9 months pregnant with our second child, the business that supported our family closed. In addition to the loss of our financial support, my husband suffered the painful loss of the business which he had fought so hard to save and which had belonged to his family for two generations.

Consumed with Fear And Struggle

At the time we were so consumed with fear and struggle that couldn’t see the gift beneath all that had happened, which was that my husband Mark was finally freed from an all-consuming career that was often poisoned with toxic family dynamics. After a while, Mark and I came to the conclusion that while this situation might mean difficulty for us in the short term, it likely added years to his life. So, while we were in the habit of cutting back and making drastic changes to our lifestyle, we decided to reevaluate everything and recreate our lives.

The Goal: More Time

Our goal was that we wanted more time. We have two small children, and while I was home raising them, Mark didn’t get much time to spend with them. And, being an artist, he rarely had time to paint. I, on the other hand, was always with the kids and didn’t have time to pursue my interests in health, writing, or much of anything else. We craved time together as a family without having the weight of schedules, and longed to break from the lightning speed at which it seemed everyone we knew moved through their lives. We wanted out.

Some interesting things started to happen. We streamlined what we owned, and realized that we didn’t need two cars, as many activities for our kids, and eating out was really bad for us anyway. As it turns out, we didn’t need some of the friends we thought we did, who – apparently – were only into us for some of the possession we owned. Almost magically, friends that shared our values of a more simple way of living appeared, filling the gap and making our life more meaningful and real. It seemed that everything was pointing toward us moving forward to create the best life we could imagine. The question was, would we accept the challenge?

Things Started to Turn Around

My husband took a job that is much more creative with a company that values an entrepreneurial spirit. His hours are much less intense, and while the money is less, he enjoys his work, and our quality of life has improved tremendously. I took my love of writing and combined it with what I know about living a life free of depression without using medications, and created a website designed to help others become happier. (Clay has given me some amazing advice that I know will help take my business to the next level.) I’ve started offering a few different services such as copywriting and Reiki that brings us some money and can be done on my own time. Thanks to the generosity of a wonderful family friend, I’m learning the ins and outs of the stock market and learning to trade options. As things evolve, our plan is to pare down on the things that trade time for money and cultivate the ones that offer us more of a passive income. We’re willing to risk nearly everything for this dream, because if we don’t do it now, we know life will simply get in the way to stop us from making it happen. So, we’re committed to riding this out and we already know it won’t be easy.

Moving Forward Without Knowing Exactly What Will Evolve

So, here we are, in the midst of our family’s “financial makeover,” moving forward without really knowing exactly what will evolve. All my life I’ve made decisions based on my instincts, and even though some things didn’t work out, I have no regrets. My instincts tell me that this will work out for us, but we’re also working really hard to make it happen. I’m so grateful that I’ve started to connect with others – like Clay – who are making this happen in their own lives. This gives us the courage to believe that we can do this for ourselves – and the model to know how to do it. Our current goal, and it’s a big one, is that Mark will eventually be able to be home full time, managing the trading piece of our business. Right now that’s some way off, but we’re going to make it happen.

I Consider Us Lucky

Sometimes a well-meaning friend might express sorrow for what we’ve experienced these past few years. It always takes me aback, because I don’t think of us as having an unhappy or particularly difficult life. Frankly, I consider us lucky, because we’ve been given a second chance. It’s amazing how empowering it has been to simply let go of the collective American dream and focus on what it is that will make us really happy. And I know that one day soon, we’ll look at each other and know that all this hard work has been worth it.

The Liberation Stories Project

The Liberation Stories Project started out as an informal attempt to get to know as many people as possible who had quit their day jobs to pursue alternative paths. And it grew into much more.

Some of the upcoming liberation stories will come from internet millionaires. But they will also come from stay-at-home moms, travelers, vagabonds, small business owners, lifestyle designers, and people from all walks of life.

And Just Like That, We’ve Launched

Finance Your Freedom has been in the works for a very long time. It’s a passion of mine, and it is now live. I hope you’ll look around and enjoy.

Jane Chin was born in Taiwan, spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia, and came of age in the United States. Jane trained as a scientist, earning a doctorate in biochemistry and began a series of healthcare careers from cancer research to pharmaceutical sales to field-based medical affairs. Now as entrepreneur, Jane can fully engage in Intelligent Career Design and chart her own future. The Census Bureau may put Jane in Generation X, but Jane sees herself as a member of the "Bridge Generation", where her multi-continental, multi-cultural, and multi-career adventures has helped her form bridges between different worlds. In 2008, Jane embarked on an experiment to spend 366 days doing what she loves, to see what success, if any, may follow. What emerged is Jane’s personal journey to reconnect with The Heart Mind and Inner World Peace. She chronicles her lessons learned in the website, WhatILoveToDo.com. Her other websites include Microbusiness Mentor and Intelligent Career Design.

Jane’s Story

I never saw myself as an entrepreneur. At one point in my career, I said that I could never imagine NOT working for someone else.

I liked the steady paychecks, especially from a six-figure job with annual bonuses. I liked the paid vacation days and ability to call in sick when I got sick. I was field-based and operated out of a home office, which meant I had tremendous autonomy over my schedule. I had a cool sounding job title (Medical Science Liaison or MSL). Travel was part of my job and I would pay my my husband’s plane ticket so he could travel with me to places like Hawaii and New York. He could explore places like Hawaii during the day when I was in medical meetings and we’d have some personal time in the evenings. If the meetings ended on a Friday, we’d stay over the weekend and return to Los Angeles Sunday evening. In many ways, I already had the "dream job", and in fact, CNN Money ranked the medical science liaison career #1 in healthcare in 2007.

I Quit My Six Figure Job With No Business Idea or Backup Plan

I can imagine people thinking I was nuts when I quit this six-figure job in January of 2004. I had no "back-up plan". I didn’t even have a "business idea".

I only knew that I was troubled by the way the pharmaceutical industry used - and sometimes abused - these field medical functions in a way that may ultimately put patients at risk. I only knew that I could no longer sleep at night because I was not sure if what I was doing on the job was ethical or even legal. I also knew that many of my colleagues warned me against speaking out and becoming labeled as a troublemaker, thereby jeopardizing my future promotions. I also knew that my efforts to change company policy from within the company had failed. I decided that if I wanted to commit career suicide, it should be for a cause that was consuming me. I wanted to increase awareness of what the medical science liaison role is, and the potential uses and abuses of this function. This way, opportunistic executives could no longer hide behind an open secret.

My decision to quit my job was not a trivial one. My husband Cass and I had been living in a small apartment; we were saving up to buy our first home. By quitting, I had effectively reduced our total household income by more than half. My husband’s unfaltering support for, and belief in my mission is a significant factor in my success as an entrepreneur. He knew the risks we were taking, including the reality that I didn’t have a business plan. I couldn’t even tell him what exactly my business "model" would be, because I didn’t know either. I only knew what I wanted to accomplish and that my goals were aligned with the values and beliefs I held about my former profession.

The Birth of My Business

I created my company to be a platform where dialog can begin. Simple as that! I wrote articles. I spoke at industry conferences. Being able to take total ownership of my thoughts and express my ideas allowed me to catalyze discussions at the industry level that I could only dream of as an employee. What amazed me was that my passion for this mission to open a can of worms had many supporters, including my peers and pharmaceutical executives who genuinely cared about the profession. When you are genuinely passionate about a cause, people notice. Many industry executives and professionals who believed in me showed up to give me business and new ideas.

Things Started Taking Off

In less than two years, I was earning more than the six-figure salary that I was so afraid to lose. We found the house we loved and were able to buy our first house even though this was during the height of the California real estate boom. We’re less than 10 minutes drive from the beaches and the Pacific Ocean. We had plenty of room now to consider starting a family. Cass is only 4 miles from work so he can have a quality of life as well, instead of spending 3 hours every day in L.A. traffic. Within 5 years of creating my business, I had established a solid reputation in the pharmaceutical industry as an advocate for field-medical professionals. I opted to accept one or two significant projects per year so that I may spend the rest of my time speaking, educating, writing, and thinking.

It Wasn’t Easy and Worry Free

You may be reading this and thinking, "How Awesome! She put action behind passion and became successful!" Well, hold on a second. I want to tell you about the countless moments when I wondered if I had lost my grip on reality. Or the many times when I wondered if I should go look for another job. Or the tremendous pressure I had put on myself to be an advocate when no one was calling for me to be one. Don’t even get me started on self-confidence. If I plotted my self-confidence on a graph, it would look like a roller coaster ride, oscillating between highs and lows on a daily basis.

What kept me going? What got me through doubt and fear? I can identify 3 assets: (1) the intensity I felt for my mission, (2) Cass’s confidence in me even when I was not always confident in myself, and (3) perseverance to see through my mission to make a specific difference in the pharmaceutical industry. If I did not have any one of these 3 assets, I’d have probably given up a few months into my new role as an "accidental entrepreneur". This was why in 2007, I felt I had accomplished my original mission, I began to feel restless. I had a gut feeling that I needed to move in a new direction, where I may connect with an audience outside of a narrow niche, so that I may use what I had learned to help more people. I also became a new mom: our son Jaden was born in December 2007.

I Began 2008 With A Decision and a Crazy Idea

I began 2008 with a decision and a crazy idea. We had waited 9 years to have a baby, because I was too busy building my career, and later, my business. Now that we’re finally parents, I wanted to fully participate in my baby’s first year of life. ***Being an entrepreneur was supposed to give me options, not limit me***. I decided to exercise my option! I cut back 90% of my business activities to be a stay at home mom for Jaden’s first year of life. I wanted to be there for his first smile, his first crawl, and his first words. One late evening, when Jaden was 2 months old and feeding every two hours, I suddenly realized how little time I had left to myself.

366 Day Doing Only Things I Love to Do

I may have been deliriously exhausted or divinely inspired (or both) because I had a crazy idea to spend 366 days - one full year - "doing only things that I loved to do". Since I no longer had the luxury of time while taking care of a newborn baby, I was going to spend what little I had to do what I love to do.

Obviously, I had no idea what I was getting into. I had never been this physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted, and at the same time, spiritually engaged. This was a living meditation on so many levels. For one, I experienced what it feels like to be at total service to another human being without regard for reciprocation, where service was my reward. When newborn babies aren’t feeding, they’re usually sleeping; their main interactions are to let you know they’re hungry or sleepy. I discovered I had been embedding my "external roles" into my identity, and when my decision changed my roles overnight, I felt as if I lost grip of the person I used to be. Finally, I was surprised at how difficult it was to "do what I love to do", because I had long perfected the art of self deprivation.

My Ulterior Motive

I had an ulterior motive for getting into this crazy idea: I had my fill of self improvement books and programs where I’m encouraged to do what I love, because success would follow. I wanted to know if I can replicate my success, but in a different field, and while adventuring along the path by doing what I enjoy the most: expressing myself through writing, and sharing my experiences and insight to help someone who is going through what I had gone through.

My decision to change course is not a trivial one, and now more is at stake. We now have a huge mortgage and a baby. By changing course, I had effectively reduced our household income by more than two-thirds. Like the first time, I don’t have a "business idea". Like the first time, Cass listened to why I believed this path was important for me to explore, and again, he supported my decision.

WhatILoveToDo.com

I have been chronicling the lessons that I have learned along my journey to follow my bliss on the website, WhatILoveToDo.com. I trusted my gut feeling that I’m meant to share my knowledge and experiences with a larger audience. I said "Yes" to connections and opportunities that resonated with me. As of today, I am on Week 33 of my journey. Jaden is now crawling! He is a very active and happy baby who loves to smile and laugh. I have been blessed to be there for each one of his many milestones. I began using social media as a viable and powerful brainstorming tool (especially via Plurk.com). This in turn, opened new business avenues. I have written an introduction to a book manuscript (to be published next year) on world’s faith traditions to promote understanding among people of different religions - something I never imagined I’d have an opportunity to do. I met Clay Collins and now have this opportunity to share my story with you!

Launching Two Businesses in 2009

I am launching two new businesses in 2009. My first business will help people reconnect with their inner wisdom and rekindle their passion for life. My second business will help those who decide that entrepreneurship is part of their path, to mentor entrepreneurs on creating and launching their businesses. Manifesting your inspiration requires you to put solid strategies, tactics, and actions behind your dreams. Too often I see products and services that get you excited and motivated about starting your own business - but then fall short of the "specifics of the start".

What Makes life Life

I look forward to more "living off the grid", or rather, my adventures "between the grid". To paraphrase my Lesson Learned in Week 5 of WhatILovetoDo.com, "What makes a living cell Live is everything that happens between a cell’s organelles and vacuoles. What makes life Life is everything that happens between compartments and caches."
